What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes localized fat deposits through small, discreetly placed incisions. Using a thin tube called a cannula, I suction out fat cells from targeted areas—reshaping your contours in ways that diet and exercise cannot.

It's important to understand what liposuction is and isn't. It's not a weight loss procedure—it's a sculpting tool for people who are already at or near their ideal weight but have stubborn pockets of fat that won't respond to their fitness efforts. When performed correctly, the results are permanent because the removed fat cells don't grow back.

What Liposuction Can Do For You

Liposuction is one of the most versatile body contouring procedures available, capable of refining multiple areas in a single session.

Targeted Fat Removal

Eliminate stubborn fat deposits that won't respond to diet or exercise—from love handles to bra bulge to double chins.

Sculpted Contours

Create definition and smooth transitions between body areas for a more athletic, proportional silhouette.

Permanent Results

Fat cells removed during liposuction don't regenerate. Maintain your weight and enjoy your results for years to come.

Minimal Scarring

Small incisions (typically 3-4mm) are placed in hidden locations and fade to nearly invisible over time.

Quick Recovery

Most patients return to work within a week and resume exercise within 3-4 weeks, depending on areas treated.

Fat Transfer Option

Removed fat can be purified and transferred to enhance other areas—face, breasts, or buttocks—in the same procedure.

Treatment Areas

Liposuction can address virtually any area where you have localized fat deposits. Multiple areas can often be treated in a single session.

Outer Thighs

Fat Transfer: Turn Unwanted Fat Into Natural Enhancement

Why discard fat when it can be used to enhance other areas? As a specialist in fat grafting techniques, I can harvest fat during liposuction, purify it, and transfer it to areas where you want more volume—all in a single procedure.

This approach uses your own tissue (autologous fat) to create natural-looking enhancement without implants. The transferred fat becomes living tissue in its new location, integrating naturally with your body.

I finally have the waistline I've been working toward for years. The results look completely natural—like I just got really dedicated at the gym.

Why Choose Dr. Neavin for Liposuction

"Liposuction is as much about what you leave behind as what you take away. The goal is to sculpt—to create smooth contours and natural transitions—not just remove fat."

With over 20 years of body contouring experience in Beverly Hills, I approach liposuction as a sculpting procedure, not just fat removal. This perspective makes all the difference in achieving results that look natural rather than obviously "worked on."

My expertise in fat transfer techniques adds another dimension to what's possible. I can simultaneously remove fat from areas where you have too much and add it to areas where you'd like more volume—face, breasts, buttocks—creating comprehensive body transformation in a single procedure.

I use tumescent liposuction, the gold standard technique that minimizes bleeding, reduces post-operative discomfort, and allows for precise contouring. All procedures are performed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.

Liposuction Techniques

I use tumescent liposuction—the safest and most widely proven technique—along with power-assisted technology when appropriate to optimize your results.

Tumescent Technique

The gold standard. A special solution containing anesthetic and medication is infused into the treatment area, minimizing bleeding, reducing pain, and allowing for precise fat removal with smooth results.

Power-Assisted (PAL)

Uses a vibrating cannula to break up fat cells more efficiently. Especially useful for fibrous areas like the back and male chest, and allows me to work faster with less trauma to surrounding tissue.

Fat Grafting

Removed fat is processed and purified, then strategically re-injected to enhance facial volume, breast size, or buttock projection using your own natural tissue.

Superficial Liposuction

Targets the fat layer just beneath the skin for enhanced skin retraction and tightening. Particularly effective for arm, neck, and facial contouring.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

These procedures address different problems. Understanding which is right for you depends on your specific concerns.

Liposuction

  • Removes localized fat deposits
  • Best for good skin elasticity
  • Minimal incisions and scarring
  • Shorter recovery (1-2 weeks)
  • Can treat multiple body areas
  • Does NOT tighten loose skin
  • Does NOT repair muscles

Tummy Tuck

  • Removes excess skin
  • Repairs separated muscles
  • Best after pregnancy/weight loss
  • Longer recovery (4-6 weeks)
  • Addresses abdomen only
  • Leaves a longer scar (hidden)
  • Often combined with liposuction

Liposuction Recovery

Recovery varies by the number of areas treated and volume of fat removed. Here's a general timeline for most patients.

Day 1-3

Rest at Home

Compression garment worn, mild to moderate soreness

Week 1

Light Activity

Many return to desk work, bruising and swelling present

Week 3

Resume Exercise

Light cardio okay, bruising mostly resolved

Month 3-6

Final Results

Swelling fully resolved, final contours visible

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best liposuction candidates share certain characteristics. Here's how to know if this procedure might be right for you.

Ideal Candidates

  • Within 10-15 lbs of ideal weight
  • Stubborn fat that won't respond to diet/exercise
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Non-smoker
  • Realistic expectations
  • Generally good health

May Need Different Approach

  • Significant excess loose skin
  • Looking to lose large amounts of weight
  • Muscle separation (may need tummy tuck)
  • Poor skin elasticity
  • Weight fluctuates significantly
  • Certain medical conditions

Liposuction FAQ

Is liposuction permanent?
Yes. The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently gone—they don't regenerate. However, remaining fat cells can expand if you gain weight, so maintaining a stable weight is important for preserving your results long-term.
How much fat can be removed?
Safety guidelines typically limit fat removal to about 5 liters per session. However, liposuction isn't about removing maximum fat—it's about creating the most aesthetic contour. Sometimes removing less fat in certain areas produces better results than removing the maximum amount.
Will I have loose skin after liposuction?
Skin elasticity is a key factor in your results. Younger patients and those with good skin quality typically see their skin contract nicely after fat removal. If you have poor skin elasticity or significant excess skin, we may discuss combining liposuction with skin-tightening procedures or a tummy tuck.
How much does liposuction cost?
Cost depends on the number of areas treated, the volume of fat removed, and whether you're combining liposuction with other procedures like fat transfer. I'll provide a detailed quote after your consultation once we've determined your treatment plan.
What's the difference between liposuction and CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is non-surgical and works by freezing fat cells, which your body then eliminates over weeks to months. It's best for very small, targeted areas with modest fat reduction goals. Liposuction removes more fat, provides more precise sculpting, and produces more dramatic results—but requires surgery and recovery time.
Can I use the fat removed for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Yes, absolutely. If you want to enhance your buttocks with your own fat (BBL), liposuction is how we harvest that fat. The fat is purified and then carefully injected to add volume and improve buttock shape. This can be done in the same procedure, and it's one of my areas of expertise.
How painful is recovery?
Most patients describe the discomfort as soreness similar to an intense workout. The tumescent technique I use significantly reduces post-operative pain. You'll have prescription pain medication, but many patients transition to over-the-counter medication within a few days.
When will I see results?
You'll notice improvement immediately, but swelling masks your final results for several months. Most of the swelling resolves by 6-8 weeks, with final results visible at 3-6 months. Patience is key—the results are worth the wait.
