What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the labia—the folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening. Most commonly, this involves reducing the labia minora (inner lips) when they extend beyond the labia majora and cause discomfort or self-consciousness.

But labiaplasty isn't just about reduction. For women experiencing deflation or volume loss in the labia majora—whether from aging, childbirth, or weight loss—fat transfer can restore a fuller, more youthful appearance. Think of it like the face: as we age, the labia majora deflates. Like a beach ball that's lost air—you need to reinflate it.

Fat grafting has been my specialty for over 15 years, and the principles that work for facial rejuvenation work beautifully here as well.

Why Women Choose Labiaplasty

Women seek labiaplasty for both functional and aesthetic reasons—and often, it's a combination of both. There's no "ideal" appearance for the labia. What matters is whether your anatomy is causing you problems.

Functional Concerns

Physical Discomfort

Enlarged or asymmetrical labia minora can cause real physical discomfort in daily life:

  • Chafing and irritation in tight clothing, swimsuits, or yoga pants
  • Discomfort during exercise—cycling, running, horseback riding
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse from tissue getting pulled
  • Hygiene challenges and moisture retention
  • Twisting or folding that causes pinching throughout the day

Aesthetic Concerns

Confidence & Comfort

Many women feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia, affecting intimacy and confidence:

  • Visible protrusion through clothing or swimwear
  • Asymmetry between the two sides
  • Darkened or hyperpigmented labial edges
  • Deflated or "aged" appearance of the labia majora
  • Overall appearance that doesn't match how you feel about yourself

Labiaplasty Procedures I Perform

I offer several approaches to intimate rejuvenation. The right choice depends on your specific anatomy and goals—we'll discuss the best approach during your consultation.

Labia Minora Reduction

Most Common Procedure

Reduces the size of the inner labia so they no longer protrude beyond the outer labia or cause discomfort. Performed using trim or wedge technique.

  • Eliminates excess tissue
  • Corrects asymmetry
  • Can remove darkened edges
  • Minimal visible scarring

Labia Majora Fat Transfer

Dr. Neavin Specialty

Restores volume to deflated outer labia using your own fat—harvested from another area via gentle liposuction, purified, and carefully injected.

  • Uses your own tissue
  • Long-lasting results
  • Improves appearance & comfort
  • No foreign materials
15+ Years Experience

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Often Combined

Reduces excess tissue of the clitoral hood that creates a bulky or hooded appearance. Performed with precision to maintain sensitivity.

  • More balanced appearance
  • Often combined with labiaplasty
  • Preserves sensation
  • Delicate technique

Labia Minora Reduction Techniques

There are two primary surgical approaches. I'm proficient in both and will recommend the technique that best fits your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Trim Technique

Most Common Method

Removes excess tissue along the entire outer edge of the labia minora, creating a new, more "tucked in" appearance.

  • Effective when both labia are enlarged
  • Removes darker, hyperpigmented edge
  • Straightforward approach
  • Scar along new labial edge (heals extremely well)
  • Can combine with clitoral hood reduction

Wedge Technique

Preserves Natural Edge

Removes a V-shaped section from the central portion of the labia, preserving the natural labial edge and its coloration.

  • Maintains natural edge appearance
  • Scar hidden within labia
  • Good for correcting asymmetry
  • Preferred when one side needs more reduction
  • More technically complex

I dealt with discomfort for years before finally making an appointment. The procedure was easier than I expected, and now I can wear what I want and exercise without thinking about it. I wish I had done this sooner.

Why Choose Dr. Neavin for Labiaplasty

"I understand that discussing this area of your body can feel uncomfortable. Please know that my staff and I approach these consultations with complete professionalism, discretion, and sensitivity. This is a common procedure, and you have nothing to be embarrassed about."

Labiaplasty requires precision, artistry, and experience. This is delicate tissue, and small differences in technique can significantly impact results. I approach labiaplasty the same way I approach any aesthetic procedure—with attention to symmetry, proportion, and natural-looking results.

My expertise in fat transfer techniques gives you options that many surgeons can't offer. If you're experiencing deflation of the labia majora—whether from aging, weight loss, or childbirth—I can use fat harvested from another area to naturally restore volume. I've been performing fat transfer procedures for over 15 years, making this a specialty of my practice.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Here's what to expect from consultation through recovery.

1

Private Consultation

We discuss your concerns, perform a brief examination, and determine which technique would best address your goals. You'll leave with a clear understanding of the procedure, recovery, and expected results. Your consultation is completely confidential.

2

Surgery Day

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure taking 1-2 hours. For most patients, local anesthesia with light sedation is sufficient—you're comfortable but awake. For more extensive procedures or if you prefer, general anesthesia is available. You go home the same day.

3

Immediate Recovery

You'll have some swelling and mild discomfort, typically manageable with over-the-counter medication. Ice packs help reduce swelling. Most patients describe the recovery as easier than expected—more uncomfortable than painful. Dissolvable sutures mean no stitch removal.

4

Results

Most patients return to desk work within 5-7 days. Exercise resumes at 4-6 weeks. Sexual activity can typically resume at 4-6 weeks once cleared. Final results emerge over 3-6 months as swelling fully resolves and tissues settle. Scars heal remarkably well in this tissue.

Recovery Timeline

Recovery from labiaplasty is generally easier than most patients expect. Here's what to anticipate.

Week 1

Rest & Heal

Swelling peaks days 2-3. Ice, rest, loose clothing. Most manage with Tylenol.

Week 2-3

Improving

Swelling subsides. Sutures dissolving. Return to desk work. Light walking OK.

Week 4-6

Resume Activity

Exercise cleared. Sexual activity may resume. Feeling much more normal.

3-6 Months

Final Results

All swelling gone. Scars fading. Full sensation. Enjoy your results!

  • Post-menopause tissue changes
  • Combining with other body procedures
  • Previous labiaplasty (revision surgery)
  • Active infection (must be resolved first)

Labiaplasty FAQ

How much does labiaplasty cost?
Labiaplasty costs vary depending on the technique used and whether additional procedures (like clitoral hood reduction or labia majora fat transfer) are included. During your consultation, I'll provide a detailed quote based on your specific treatment plan. Financing options are available.
Is labiaplasty covered by insurance?
In most cases, labiaplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, if you're experiencing documented medical issues like chronic irritation or infection due to your anatomy, some insurers may provide partial coverage. We can provide documentation if you'd like to submit a claim.
Will there be visible scars?
The labial tissue heals remarkably well. Scars are typically hidden within natural folds and contours, very thin and flat once healed, and difficult to see even upon close inspection. Most patients—and their partners—cannot detect any evidence of surgery once fully healed.
Will labiaplasty affect sensation?
Temporary changes in sensation are normal during the healing process due to swelling and nerve recovery. Permanent loss of sensation is rare when performed by an experienced surgeon using proper technique. Most patients report normal—or even improved—sensation once fully healed, as excess tissue that was causing interference is no longer present.
How long do I need to take off work?
Most patients take 5-7 days off work. If your job involves significant physical activity or tight clothing, you may need up to two weeks. Desk work can typically resume within a week.
When can I exercise after labiaplasty?
Light walking is encouraged within the first week. Low-impact exercise can typically resume around week 4. High-impact activities, cycling, and swimming should wait until you're fully healed—usually 6 weeks. I'll clear you for specific activities at your follow-up appointments.
When can I have sex after labiaplasty?
Sexual activity should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks to allow proper healing. I'll clear you for activity at your follow-up appointment based on how you're healing. When you do resume, start slowly—things may feel slightly different as you adjust to your new anatomy.
Will labiaplasty affect my ability to have children?
No. Labiaplasty does not affect fertility, pregnancy, or your ability to deliver vaginally. However, pregnancy can potentially affect your results, so I generally recommend waiting until after you're done having children if possible—or being prepared for possible changes.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure itself is not painful due to anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild to moderate and well-controlled with over-the-counter medication like Tylenol. Most patients describe the recovery as easier than expected—more discomfort than pain.
What's the difference between a plastic surgeon and gynecologist for labiaplasty?
Both can perform labiaplasty. Plastic surgeons generally have specialized training in soft tissue contouring, aesthetic outcomes, and scar minimization. I approach labiaplasty the same way I approach any aesthetic procedure—with attention to symmetry, proportion, and natural-looking results.
