What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift—also called a lower rhytidectomy or platysmaplasty—is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the neck and jawline by removing excess skin, tightening underlying muscles, and eliminating fat deposits that create a "turkey neck" appearance.

The neck ages differently than the face. Skin becomes loose, fat accumulates under the chin, and the platysma muscle (which runs from the collarbone to the jaw) separates, creating visible vertical bands. A neck lift addresses all of these issues to restore a smooth, defined profile.

Common Neck Aging Concerns

These are the changes that bring patients to my office—and that a neck lift can dramatically improve.

"Turkey Neck"

Loose, hanging skin under the chin that creates a waddle-like appearance

Neck Bands

Visible vertical cords in the neck from separated platysma muscles

Double Chin

Excess fat beneath the chin that blurs the jawline

Jowls

Loose skin that droops over the jawline, hiding definition

Lost Jawline Definition

A blunted, obtuse angle between chin and neck instead of a sharp contour

Horizontal Neck Lines

Deep creases that circle the neck and add years to appearance

Neck Lift Techniques

The approach we use depends on what's causing your neck aging—excess skin, fat, muscle laxity, or a combination.

Mini Neck Lift

Limited Incision

For patients with early signs of aging who want improvement with less downtime. Uses smaller incisions and less extensive tissue manipulation.

  • Smaller incisions
  • Shorter recovery
  • Good for mild laxity
  • Often combined with liposuction
  • Results last 5-10 years

Platysmaplasty

Muscle Tightening

Specifically targets the platysma muscle bands that create vertical cords in the neck. Often combined with other neck lift techniques.

  • Eliminates neck bands
  • Small incision under chin
  • Corset-style muscle tightening
  • Can be standalone or combined
  • Good for younger patients

Neck Liposuction

Fat Removal Only

For patients whose main concern is excess fat under the chin with good skin elasticity. Removes fat without addressing loose skin or muscle.

  • Minimal incision
  • Fastest recovery
  • Requires good skin elasticity
  • Can be done under local anesthesia
  • Often first step for younger patients

Standalone Neck Lift

Ideal when the neck is your primary concern and your face still looks relatively youthful.

  • Face still looks good
  • Neck aging is primary concern
  • Shorter procedure time
  • Lower cost
  • Easier recovery

Combined with Facelift

Best when both face and neck show signs of aging for harmonious, comprehensive rejuvenation.

  • Addresses face and neck together
  • More balanced, harmonious results
  • Single recovery period
  • Cost savings vs. separate surgeries
  • Most common approach

I used to hate photos from the side—my neck made me look so much older. Now I actually have a jawline again! It's like Dr. Neavin turned back the clock 15 years.

Why Choose Dr. Neavin for Your Neck Lift

"The neck is unforgiving—every bit of laxity shows. My approach is to create a smooth, natural contour from the chin to the collarbone that looks like you, just younger."

Neck lift surgery requires precise technique and artistic vision. Remove too much skin, and the neck looks tight and unnatural. Don't address the underlying muscle, and bands reappear within months. Leave fat behind, and the contour won't be clean. With over 20 years of experience in facial and neck rejuvenation, I address all layers—skin, fat, and muscle—to create lasting, natural results.

I also spend time evaluating whether your concerns can be addressed with a neck lift alone or whether a facelift combination would give you better results. Many patients come in asking for a neck lift when they'd actually benefit from treating the lower face as well. Getting this recommendation right is key to your satisfaction.

The Neck Lift Procedure

Here's what to expect from your neck rejuvenation journey.

1

Consultation

We examine your neck, jawline, and face to identify what's causing the aging—excess skin, fat, muscle laxity, or a combination. I'll recommend the best approach (neck lift alone vs. combined with facelift) and explain which technique will give you the best results.

2

Surgery Day

A full neck lift typically takes 2-3 hours under general anesthesia. Incisions are made under the chin and behind each ear. Fat is removed or sculpted, the platysma muscle is tightened (platysmaplasty), and excess skin is trimmed and redraped.

3

Immediate Recovery

You'll go home the same day wearing a compression wrap around your neck. Drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation (removed in 1-2 days). Keep your head elevated and expect swelling and bruising that peaks around day 3.

4

Results

Most patients return to work and social activities within 2 weeks. Sutures are removed around day 7-10. Final results emerge over 3-6 months as swelling resolves, and typically last 10-15+ years.

Recovery Timeline

What to expect in the weeks after your neck lift.

Day 1-3

Peak Swelling

Compression wrap. Head elevated. Drains removed. Ice packs.

Day 7-10

Sutures Out

Most bruising fades. Sutures removed. Neck feels tight.

Week 2

Back to Work

Most return to work. Makeup can cover residual bruising.

Month 3-6

Final Results

All swelling gone. Incisions fade. Final contour visible.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Most adults with neck aging concerns are candidates for a neck lift. Here's how to know if it's right for you.

Ideal Candidates

  • Visible neck bands (platysma cords)
  • Excess fat under the chin
  • Lost jawline definition
  • Good overall health
  • Non-smoker (or willing to quit temporarily)
  • Realistic expectations

May Need Different Approach

  • Only excess fat (may benefit from liposuction alone)
  • Significant face and neck aging (facelift + neck lift)
  • Very thin skin or poor elasticity
  • Active smoker unwilling to stop
  • Unrealistic expectations about results
  • Medical conditions affecting healing

Neck Lift FAQ

How much does a neck lift cost?
In Beverly Hills, a standalone neck lift typically ranges from $8,000 to $15,000 depending on the technique and extent of work needed. Combined with a facelift, the total may range from $18,000 to $30,000. This includes surgeon fees, anesthesia, and facility costs. I'll provide a detailed quote after your consultation.
How long do neck lift results last?
A well-performed neck lift typically lasts 10-15 years, sometimes longer. While your neck will continue to age, you'll always look younger than you would have without the procedure. Maintaining a stable weight, protecting your skin from sun damage, and not smoking all help extend your results.
Can I have a neck lift without a facelift?
Yes—and many patients do. A standalone neck lift is ideal when the neck is your primary concern and your face still looks relatively youthful. However, if you also have jowls, sagging cheeks, or significant lower face laxity, combining a facelift with your neck lift will give you more balanced, harmonious results. I'll help you determine the best approach during your consultation.
Where are the scars?
Neck lift incisions are well-hidden. A small incision under the chin allows access to fat and the platysma muscle. Additional incisions behind each ear and into the hairline allow skin to be redraped and excess removed. Once healed, these scars are typically very difficult to see, especially the one under the chin which fades into the natural crease.
Is a neck lift painful?
Most patients describe discomfort rather than significant pain—primarily tightness, soreness, and mild swelling. Prescription pain medication is provided for the first few days, but most patients transition to over-the-counter pain relief within 3-5 days. The neck may feel tight and numb initially, which is normal and improves over several weeks.
What about non-surgical alternatives?
Non-surgical options like Kybella (for fat), Ultherapy, or radiofrequency treatments can provide modest improvement for mild concerns. However, they cannot address loose skin, tighten separated muscles, or achieve the dramatic, lasting results of surgery. If you have significant laxity or turkey neck, surgery is the only effective solution.
At what age should I get a neck lift?
There's no "right" age. Most patients are between 45 and 65, but I've successfully treated patients in their late 30s (often due to genetics or weight loss) and patients in their 70s. What matters is your individual anatomy, skin quality, and goals—not your birthdate. If your neck bothers you enough to consider surgery, you're likely a candidate.
What is platysmaplasty?
Platysmaplasty is a technique specifically targeting the platysma muscle—the thin muscle that runs from your collarbone to your jaw. As we age, this muscle separates in the midline, creating visible vertical bands in the neck. Platysmaplasty involves suturing these muscles back together (like a corset) to eliminate banding and create a smoother contour. It's often performed as part of a neck lift.
